Hoppy Days: Where to Sample Craft Beer in Glenwood Springs

Casey Brewing and Blending in Glenwood Springs

Life is too short to drink boring beer. Thankfully in Glenwood Springs, Colorado you don't have to. Two breweries and a couple of pubs devoted to the art of drinking suds keep the focus on flavor.

There’s something in the water in Glenwood Springs, and it’s not only in our mineral hot springs. Water is the foundation of one of our favorite adult beverages—premium craft beer. It’s no coincidence Glenwood Springs lays claim to the World’s Best Brewer, an award-winning brewery and boasts several establishments devoted to all things beer. Read on to learn where you can meet the makers and sample what’s on tap.

Casey Brewing and Blending
Troy Casey’s shop is located a little out of the way, across from the town cemetery, but that doesn’t stop his fans from making the trek to sample his eclectic sour blends—built on all-Colorado ingredients. Casey has a cult-following, attracting beer aficionados from as far away as Iceland and Japan. Although Casey could go big, he’s determined to keep his operation intimate. He only gives pre-ticketed tours a few times per month; each session includes a private cellar tour and a flight of three four-ounce pours. In 2016, Casey was named World’s Best Brewer by Draft magazine.

Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company
The Glenwood Canyon Brewpub has been winning beer competitions like the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup for more than a decade. Brewmaster Todd Malloy and his crew live for making fresh, creative options that keep visitors and locals coming back for more. Try the Hanging Lake Honey Ale, St. James Irish Red and Vapor Cave India Pale Ale or seasonal specialties like Deep Lake Scotch Ale, Hasta La Vista Schwarzbier and No Name Nut Brown Ale. The Barrel Project beers are loaded with complexity and sold in smaller tastes inside the brewery.

Glenwood Springs Beer Garden
Drop in anytime, especially after a hike, river rafting or a day on the slopes. The vibe is laid back and welcoming. Buy noshables from the food truck out front or bring your own nibbles. You can’t miss this little pub with its door painted to look like a mug-o-beer. There are 14 beers on draft; try a taster flight of four for just $7.50.

The Grind
Voted best tap list in town, this neighborhood pub in downtown features an everchanging tap list of 20 craft beers, including a nitro option. The Grind is so committed to beer culture that, in addition to serving up its famous fresh ground burgers, it has dedicated “Beer Snacks” to pair with your cold one. Every Tuesday, the pub also hosts Geeks Who Drink, a trivia game.

Smoke Modern BBQ
You’ll always find something local on tap at Smoke—whether it’s Troy Casey’s cherry sour or another Colorado-based brewer’s offering. The restaurant tries to always feature six Colorado beers and two from further afield, plus a nitro tap in the winter. According to Kerry, the day manager, current beers to try include Snowdrop by Grimm Brothers and Isolation Ale by Odell Brewing.
